The Shawangunk Ridge is facing a number of threats. Below are a list of some of the ones we are monitoring. Please review and check our "what you can do" section of each of the below threats.
- Shawanga Lodge - a 250-room resort hotel, conference center and sports complex, six-stories high, would sit right on top of the Shawangunk Ridge, on 307 acres in the Town of Mamakating. It is vitally important that the DEC, as owner/manager of adjacent forest lands, serve as the lead agent for this project. It is very important that you attend meetings and voice your opinions! - Sullivan County Casinos: A Threat to the Ridge - Individually and in combination, the Mohawk Resort and Casino at the Kutsher's site; the Stockbridge Munsee band of the Mohican casino, slated for Bridgeville; and the Cayuga Casino planned for the Monticello Raceway site, represent development on a scale that is unprecedented in our County and the region. This is a regional issue, not just a Sullivan County issue!
- Mushroom Plant - Basha Kill - Local citizens and groups in and round Mamakating are working to stop the approval of the Mushroom Plant, a major development proposals currently before the Town of Mamakating Planning Board that will have very serious environmental impacts on the Basha Kill watershed and the Ridge if they go forward.

- Several Exits on Rt 17 have been proposed and may be reconfigured when the conversion to I-86 takes place. Of critical interest to the SRC is discussion about Exit 114 on the Shawngunk Ridge. The DOT is still considering "several alternatives....from closure to construction of a fully directional interchange" at Exit 114. The DOT requests calls or written comments to: David Ligeikis, P.E., Regional Planning & Program Manager, NYS DOT, 44 Hawley Street, Binghamton, NY 13901-4434. Phone contact is Pamela Gendron at 607-721-8561.
- St. Regis Mohawk Tribe Mohawk Mtn. Casino and Resort - IMPORTANT ACTION ALERT FOR RESIDENTS OF SULLIVAN, ULSTER AND ORANGE COUNTIES. A public hearing about the casino at Kutsher's is scheduled for Wed. evening, 6/23, at 7:00pm at the Sullivan County Govt. Center in Monticello, NY. Comments will be taken on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe Mohawk Mtn.
