Horseback Riding in the Shawangunks

Seemingly endless carriage trails in Minnewaska State Park Preserve and in the Mohonk Preserve, surrounded by boulders, cliffs, pine trees, and blueberry bushes: a horse lover's dream in the Gunks. Horseback riders who have never been to the Ridge, and specifically to these trail networks won't believe the potential. Circuit trails around mountain lakes, circuit trails (most great footing) that wind through the woods, make a day's ride an incredible experience. For those who love horses, but don't own one, horses (and very good ones) are available for hire, with a guide, at Mohonk.

In Minnewaska, a great trail takes off from the lower parking lot, which is where horse trailers are to be parked. A straightaway path begins the trail and quickly leads to rolling hills that make for a good gallop. (Watch out, though, there are rocks, so it is advised that you ride the trail at a leisurely pace until you know where the rock outcroppings are!) The trail, after approximately 3 miles, ends at an intersection, and if riders take the left branch, they will be heading toward another trail that leads them to and around Lake Awosting. Riders have to travel over a brief span of rock beach by the lake, and must keep far back from the lake to avoid beachgoers, but after that the trail gets smaller, leading up to the most magnificent views of the incredibly pure, emerald green waters and surrounding cliffs. For horses and riders in good shape, they can then find their way back to the intersection and proceed on the right branch going to the trails on the other end of the preserve surrounding Lake Minnewaska. A magnificent side trail takes off from the main trail to the Lake, leading riders through an abandoned orchard, again a great place for a spirited canter. Locals regularly visit the trails with their steeds - there are so many possibilities for different rides that it few could ever tire of what the preserves have to offer.

Trail maps are available at both parks, and it is recommended that riders obtain one before taking off. At the same time, riders must have current Coggins and shot verifications to present to the rangers before entering the park. While there is an entrance fee for both parks, Mohonk is more expensive and has more regulations that riders must follow. Riders should call ahead to make sure they understand what is required, before trailering up. Once you ride in the preserves, you will recognize the endless potential for absolutely great rides to come. Be aware, however, that mountain bikers share the trail, and on weekends, the trails can be packed with people. Local riders know this, and plan whenever possible to come up midweek when the parks are beautifully peaceful and seem to be waiting just for you.
