The state legislature has passed a bill to give the Shawangunk Mountains Scenic Byway official designation as a State Scenic Byway and add it to the state's scenic byway system.
Al Wegener is executive director of the Shawangunk Mountains Regional Partnership, which lobbied for the designation and the benefits that come with it.
"This will link together all of the communities that encircle the Shawangunk Mountains," he said. The 11 municipalities involved have a plan for tourism, for improved transportation and for preservation of the resources in the region.
Participating towns include Crawford, Gardiner, Marbletown, Montgomery, New Paltz, Rochester, Rosendale, Shawangunk, Wawarsing and the villages of Ellenville and New Paltz.
The legislation, which still needs the governor's signature, was sponsored by Assemblyman Kevin Cahill and Senator John Bonacic.
