Monticello – The environmental review for the proposed St. Regis Mohawk casino at Monticello Raceway may say an expansion of NY Rt. 17 from two to three lanes in each direction is not necessary; however, David Hanlon, CEO of Empire Resorts, owners of raceway facilities, said they support “any investment in the future of the Hudson Valley region.”
Senator Charles Schumer last year secured $1 million in federal funds to begin the process of widening the highway from Harriman to Monticello.
“Empire Resorts and its partners the St Regis Mohawk Tribe share the goal of improving the quality of life for residents in this region,” said Hanlon. “We are pleased to be working with Senator Schumer, Congressman Hinchey and Governor Spitzer all of whom have supported this project and are currently working to secure the final federal approvals from the Department of the Interior.”
The St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Council, meanwhile, said the tribe “is confident that the casino development will spark many other private economic development efforts that will help revitalize the Catskills region.”
A state Department of Transportation study “is both a welcome and needed effort that is critical to the growth that is anticipated for Sullivan County,” the council officials said.
